Installing Mikrotik RouterOS on VirtualBox Posted: 26 Jul 2013 02:47 AM PDT Mikrotik, a Linux-based operating system designed for router. This operating system is the OS that powering proprietary hardware Mikrotik RouterBoard. Mikrotik OS also can be installed to x86-based computers, which will be discussed on this article. In this article, we will discuss about how to install MikrotikOS to VirtualBox. For this purpose I use:
The method covered here is generic, which can be applied to other version of Mikrotik as well. Obtain the MaterialGo to Mikrotik’s website and download the appropriate image for PC/x86. You might not find the version 5.18 on the site as Mikrotik display the latest version, different version we have on this article. However like I said, you can use higher version and adjust the instructions listed in this article. If you are interested, I have the ISO file which you can download here. Make sure you have 7zip to open the archive. The archive use .xar extension but you should rename it to .7z extension first. Virtual Machine PreparationBefore installing Mikrotik RouterOS, we should create a virtual machine.
Now we do preparation before installation began. Open menu setting and navigate to Storage. Here, move the existing VDI image (under SATA) to IDE and load the ISO.
Then navigate to Network. Enable at least two adapter. One for WAN (Wide Area Network) and the other one LAN (Local Area Network).
InstallationBoot up the virtual machine. There you should see the image is loaded and then some list occurred. As we install it on top of Virtual Machine, basic modules is suffiecient.
Press ‘i’ if you are ready. The installation will use all disk space, which is OK for us. Remove the ISO image and press ENTER to reboot the virtual machine There mikrotik will ask credential. As it is our first time using this image, use the default username admin without password.
